Know it All Tips and Tricks

Being a wife and a mom of two darling monkeys, I have a lot more things I’d like to share with everyone than just politics.  Politics is a passion of mine, but I wouldn’t truly be Little Miss Know it All if I didn’t, well, know it all.

So starting this week, I’ll be writing on subjects of general interest to me, and filing them under the category More Know it All Tips and Tricks.  Politics will still be the bread and butter of this site, but if you’d like to hear some general life tips, check it out.

Up this week, our adventure with the grocery budget, how we cut $200 out of it and still eat well.

Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome

April is Autism Awareness Month.  You’re going to see lots of stories this month as light is shed on this issue.  As you probably know, my son has Asperger’s Syndrome, a mild form of autism which impairs his social abilities.  As a parent of a child on the spectrum, there’s a few things I’d like to see change.

1)  Doctors, when parents come to you and say, “Something’s not right” please listen.  I’m not talking about the parent who calls you in the middle of the night panicked over every sniffle, cough or wheeze.  But if a normal parent comes to you and says that something isn’t right, and is worried over developmental delays, REFER THEM!  Send them to a specialist, let it be ruled out or deemed a possibility.  Many cases of autism that get early intervention are success stories–children who develop to be almost normal children.  But time and again, (and it happened to us) parents tell their pediatricians there is something not right, and they get a pat the head, silly parent, you’re just a worrywort, kind of response.  What harm does it do to refer them to a specialist?

2)  Insurance companies, cover therapies.  You wouldn’t believe what an hour of physical therapy costs, and most insurance only covers 20 visits a year, for all therapies.  Most autistic children require 3-4 therapies a week.  Many of them need hours of it every day.  We are blessed with insurance that covers all of it, but we are the exception, not the rule.  I know families who spend $900 a month on basic health insurance, and then over $1000 a month on extra therapies.  That breaks the average family.  I have seen wealthy families go bankrupt as they try to provide the care their autistic child needs.  That’s savage.  In a country where every day 67 new cases are diagnosed, its unexcusable.

3)  Fund schools.  Schools are mandated by federal law, through the IDEA act, to provide whatever services are necessary for each child to succeed at school and perform at the same level as other children.  Most schools are doing what they can, but are hampered by lack of funding.  Even at our school, which gets an A+ when compared to most schools, its not enough.  Speech classes are so crammed that they have multiple disabilities learning multiple skills at any given time.  My son doesn’t have classic speaking issues, his are in receptive language (understanding what he hears) but he’s put into a class where he learns with children who have hearing or speaking issues.  Those children don’t need my son’s therapy, and he doesn’t need theirs.  Its a waste of the teacher’s time and the child’s time if they are having to combine them that way.  It happens over and over again–not enough training for teachers, leading to great frustration with the kids.  Not enough education for the other kids–leading to bullying and other problems.  Watch the video below, and see what a little education can do.  Follow this link at ABCnews.com for more information on treatments, causes, and how to help.

Which Billy is It? Updated…

Update:  Apparently, its “an honor.”  At the pep rally yesterday those were Gillispie’s favorite words.  Other great quotes from yesterday:  when asked if he minds being several coaches down the list, he answered “I don’t care if I was seventh or eighth on the list.  I’m at Kentucky.”  On being his dream job: “”You never think something like this is going to happen.  Through hard work, dedication and luck, I am sitting here in the best position you can ever have as a basketball coach. Thank you very much for having the confidence in me to entrust the best basketball program in the country.”  And on winning rivalries:  “We’re going to try to win them all, whether it’s considered a rivalry or not.  If they’re keeping score, we’re trying to win.”

See video below of an interview with Gillispie right after the announcement.  He describes how the whole process went, and how he feels so lucky he needs to “pinch himself.”  He looks like a little boy on Christmas morning.  Welcome, Billy.

Well, we all heard yesterday that Billy the Kid, aka Billy Donovan, decided not to accept UK’s offer and is instead staying with Florida.  We also heard yesterday that Bob Huggins is headed to WVU, and well, I’m sorry for them.  I doubt they know what they’re getting.

But today, it seems another Billy might be taking over the head coaching job at UK.  Billy Gillespie is his name, and if his name makes you say “WHO?” check out the story and his history over at ESPN.com.  UK has announced a press conference and pep rally today at 12:45 to introduce their new coach.  (And if you’ve been following the Cats cheerleaders on Cheerleader U, here’s a chance to see them in action.)

Check back later today…I’ll post video of his introduction.  We have a new face in KY, and in a week or two, he’ll beat Fletcher and all the other horses for name recognition!

God Bless America?

There is an excess of opinions swirling around in my head–but you knew that, didn’t you?  Otherwise, why would I be called Little Miss Know it All?

The truth is, there’s a lot I want to say about the combination of politics and religion, or government and religion, and the trap that many Americans are falling into.  But there’s so much, its hard to sort it all out and write it down in a coherent argument.  So I’m starting a new blog series, called God Bless America.  Hopefully if I break it down a piece at a time, I won’t start to rant (at least not too much) and I’ll keep it coherent for you.  Because the more passionate I get, the harder it is for me to put it into words.  I’m sure you know the feeling.

Part 1–the Saduccees and the Pharisees

Part 2–Israel in the Old Testament and the similarities with modern America

Part 3–Using God like a Buddha to rub his belly

Part 4–Religion in schools and government

Part 5–Idolatry, plain and simple

Part 6–God Bless America around the world

All along the way, I’d like to hear from you.  Agree?  Violently disagree?  I’m sure there will be some of both.  Especially when I open up on the fallicies of ‘God Bless America.’  I’d be pleased to hear from you.

What kind of world…

Please take time this weekend to visit What Kind Of World Do You Want, a website set up by the band Five for Fighting to combine viral video and charitable causes.  Talk about a band that walks its talk, the band is donating $.49 for every video watched on the site to the charity named.  Anyone can upload a video and raise money for the charities.  There’s even a video contest.

So please, take a trip over and visit the Autism Speaks area and watch a few videos.  In the Know it All family, we know the pain of Autism all too well.  In a world where autism is diagnosed every 20 minutes, where one in every 150 children has autism, and one in every 90 boys has autism, this is a critical time.  We must do whatever we can to stop the tide, and help those already living with autism.

Congratulations, Five for Fighting.  You’ve put your money where your mouth is.  Thank you for doing something, instead of just saying something.

Parodies

I do love Youtube and Myspace video.  Anyone with access to a camera and internet service can show the world what a clever idiot they really are.  Some are really clever videos, and well, some lean more to the idiot side of the scale.

Seems that in the world of politics, we love parodies of pop culture.  So this weekend I present to you a series of videos parodying the Mac/PC ads, using Democrats and Republicans in their place.  This is just a sampling of these ads.  Let me know if you like them, I’ll post more.

Enjoy!

Truly Important News

Okay, forget politics, lets talk about the really important news these past few days.

Tubby Smith

First up, Tubby quit!  To all UK fans, this is BIG!  Either you loved him and thought he did alright, or you are rabid with anger over the program’s mediocrity and are thrilled to see him go.  An interesting comment from UK President Todd, “Mitch Barnhart and I have talked extensively about the process for hiring a new coach of Kentucky basketball,” Todd said.  Hmmm, they can say all they want that they didn’t discuss Tubby leaving, but that statement says they’ve talked about how to hire a new coach, and you only hire a new coach when the current one leaves.  Now the really big discussion starts–who will they get to replace him?  Donovan is the obvious big name being bantered about.  What do you think?  Who would you choose?  Vote in the poll to the right, and leave a comment below.

Queen Elizabeth II Second, The Queen is Coming!  If you are a Louisvillian, or a Derby fan, you know this is big news.  The Queen of England and her husband Prince Phillip will be in the country for 6 days, making a stop at the Derby.  Now if only the Queen Mum was still around, she’d really know how to do the Derby.  A drink in one hand, a racing form in the other, and a party in the infield.   With Mr. Little Miss Know it All being a Brit, maybe this year he’ll take a little more interest in this quaint custom we have around these parts called the Derby.

And for those of you who are big UK fans, like the whole Know it All family, here’s a video from Youtube that should remind you why you love them so much!  [kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/-D46su8m92g" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]

Must see TV!

I LOVE IT!!!! Go Barbara, Go Barbara…

Two must see videos from C-span and YouTube from Al Gore’s testimony on Global Warming yesterday–

Start here as the new chair Senator Barbara Boxer lets former chair Senator Inhofe know just who’s in charge…[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/xVVKUwEIAg0" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]

and then over to Senator Inhofe Pouts.

Oh, I love the changes!  What fun!

Hillary and Edwards in the news

All eyes will be on the Edwards campaign today as we await their news conference at noon to discuss family health issues.  You may remember that his wife Elizabeth is a Breast Cancer survivor.  Things have been very quiet in the Edwards camp–they will only say that it is a family news conference and its about health.  When asked recently what could stop him from running for President, John said only Elizabeth’s health could stop him.

Edited at 12:40 pm–John Edwards just announced that Elizabeth’s cancer has returned but that his campaign will go on.  For more details please visit http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/22/edwards.2008/index.html.  And please pray for Elizabeth–the cancer is in her bones, and while they say they feel lucky to have caught it early, it is now incurable, only treatable, a condition she will live with for the rest of her life.  I will be praying for insight for the Doctors, and strength and fortitude for this couple that has already faced quite a lot.

And on a not nearly as important note….The creator of the Hillary as Big Brother in the classic Apple Ad has been revealed.  I saw an interview with Hillary on the video yesterday.  She was laughing and said she was happy that finally no one was watching her sing the national anthem on Youtube anymore.

Mystery Creator of Anti-Clinton Ad Identified

By JIM KUHNHENN

AP

WASHINGTON (March 22) – The mystery creator of the Orwellian YouTube ad against Hillary Rodham Clinton is a Democratic operative who worked for a digital consulting firm with ties to rival Sen. Barack Obama.

Guerrilla Politics?

Philip de Vellis, a strategist with Blue State Digital, acknowledged in an interview with The Associated Press that he was the creator of the video, which portrayed Clinton as a Big Brother figure and urged support for Obama’s presidential campaign.

De Vellis said he resigned from the firm on Wednesday after he learned that he was about to be unmasked by the HuffingtonPost.com., a liberal news and opinion Internet site.

Blue State designed Obama’s Web site and one of the firm’s founding members, Joe Rospars, took a leave from the company to work as Obama’s director of new media.

“It’s true … yeah, it’s me,” de Vellis said Wednesday evening.

YouTube Attack

He said he produced the ad outside of work and that neither Blue State nor the Obama campaign was aware of his role in the ad.

“But it raises some eyebrows, so I thought it best that I resign and not put them in that position.”

In a statement released Wednesday evening, the Obama campaign said:

“The Obama campaign and its employees had no knowledge and had nothing to do with the creation of the ad. We were notified this evening by a vendor of ours, Blue State Digital, that an employee of the company had been involved in the making of this ad. Blue State Digital has separated ties with this individual and we have been assured he did no work on our campaign’s account.”

The Clinton campaign had no immediate comment.

The connection to the Obama camp, however, poses a public relations problem for the campaign. Obama has argued that he is a different type of presidential candidate who rejects negative politics.

The ad was guerrilla politics at its cleverest and had become the boffo hit of the YouTube Web site.

The 74-second clip, a copy of a 1984 Apple ad for its Macintosh computer, has recorded nearly 1.5 million views, with an enormous surge in the past two days. The video’s final image reads “BarackObama.com.”

De Vellis remained hidden for weeks, protected by the anonymity afforded by YouTube and the absence of federal regulations governing most Internet political speech.

The ad portrayed Clinton on a huge television screen addressing robotic humans in a stark, futuristic hall. A female athlete tosses a hammer at the screen, destroying Clinton’s image with an explosive flash. Then this text: “On January 14th the Democratic primary will begin. And you will see why 2008 isn’t going to be like ‘1984.’”

De Vellis said he used footage of an updated Apple ad that portrayed the female athlete wearing an iPod. He said he used standard Apple equipment to modify the video and edit Clinton’s image into the clip.

Obama, appearing on CNN’s “Larry King Live” Monday night, said his campaign knew nothing about the origins of the anti-Clinton ad.

“Frankly, given what it looks like, we don’t have the technical capacity to create something like this,” he said. “It’s pretty extraordinary.”
