Interesting Polling

Some interesting polling has been released in the past week, showing that the candidates crowned by the media as ’shoo-ins’ are not always favorites of voters.

First, a very unscientific poll from Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Peter Bronson. If you aren’t familiar with Bronson, he’s the former editor of the op-ed section of the Enquirer, and a classic conservative. Cincinnati is a bastion of conservativism, a place where Bush still engenders great support. And as Bronson points out, Guiliani isn’t getting any play here. Neither is McCain or Thompson. A survey of his conservative roladex found that Huckabee and Romney are big favorites here. That’s big news. Cincinnati is a good snapshot of conservatives across the nation–and if Huckabee and Romney are favorites here, they are going to do well elsewhere.

Second, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll in Iowa shows Hillary losing ground, especially among second round voters. Forget the national polls, look at what’s happening in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, because that’s where much of the hype and steamroll for February’s voting will come from. One of the quirks of Iowa is the caucusing process. When you vote for say, Richardson, and he doesn’t reach 15% of the vote, you get to vote again, for someone else! And among second round voters, Hillary is not doing well. There appear to be two camps–those who will vote for Hillary, and those who will vote for anyone BUT Hillary. That’s not good news for her electability, if even within the Democrat party she has that high of a negative. If she can’t get second time voters in Iowa, will she carry them in November for us?

Other news in that poll shows Obama gaining strength, along with Edwards. If I can’t have Richardson (still my first choice), I like Edwards. I haven’t joined the Obama bandwagon–the man annoys me, for some reason I just can’t define. I’m sure he’s a great candidate, full of hope and promise, two things I usually appreciate. But for me, I just don’t like him. I can’t explain it.

    I know the feeling…my brother put it better than I could when he said that if Barack Obama would present himself like he did at the DNC in ‘04, he’d be great. Instead, he’s repackaged himself into someone who rambles on instead of giving straight answers, and that doesn’t make him stand out at all.
