When will they learn?  When will the powers that be learn, that censoring an innocuous message only gives it power?

If you’ve missed the media maelstorm, the latest tempest in a teapot, let me fill you in.  Sally Field, during her Emmy Awards acceptance speech, attempted to say that if mothers ruled the world, there’d be no more god-damned wars.  She got as far as the word ‘world’ when the cameras and sound cut and went to a static picture.  Funny enough, in Canada, they saw the whole thing, no censoring.

 It wasn’t the language, as Katherine Heigl reportedly said “oh shit” when she accepted.   It was the political agenda.

Now really, was this such a big deal?  A quick historical retropsective would have disproved her idea–an idea that’s politically and socially popular since the suffragette movement.  That women would be more peaceful, more sensible than testosterone driven men.   We all know that’s ridiculous–just look at the drama that fills our lives as women.  We like drama.  We especially like to complain about drama.  Beyond cultural observations, look at female dominated societies of the past and you’ll find we played just as dirty as the boys.  Heck, ever seen a woman fight?  We don’t fight fair.  We know where the real pain can be caused, why not go straight there?

But back to the subject at hand.  Fox, you idiots.  You’ve just taken a two minute story and made it into a two day story!   Now every American, even those who did not watch the Emmy’s, even those who would never watch the Emmy’s, have seen it, thought about it, probably even discussed it.  And her show, the one with the son going off to Iraq, the one with the fairly liberal Republican running for President, the one with openly gay men kissing–one of them a minister–is now going to get a lot more viewers.  Somehow I doubt they’ll be declaring ‘Mission Accomplished’ on this job….
