Update: Apparently, its “an honor.” At the pep rally yesterday those were Gillispie’s favorite words. Other great quotes from yesterday: when asked if he minds being several coaches down the list, he answered “I don’t care if I was seventh or eighth on the list. I’m at Kentucky.” On being his dream job: “”You never think something like this is going to happen. Through hard work, dedication and luck, I am sitting here in the best position you can ever have as a basketball coach. Thank you very much for having the confidence in me to entrust the best basketball program in the country.” And on winning rivalries: “We’re going to try to win them all, whether it’s considered a rivalry or not. If they’re keeping score, we’re trying to win.”
See video below of an interview with Gillispie right after the announcement. He describes how the whole process went, and how he feels so lucky he needs to “pinch himself.” He looks like a little boy on Christmas morning. Welcome, Billy.
Well, we all heard yesterday that Billy the Kid, aka Billy Donovan, decided not to accept UK’s offer and is instead staying with Florida. We also heard yesterday that Bob Huggins is headed to WVU, and well, I’m sorry for them. I doubt they know what they’re getting.
But today, it seems another Billy might be taking over the head coaching job at UK. Billy Gillespie is his name, and if his name makes you say “WHO?” check out the story and his history over at ESPN.com. UK has announced a press conference and pep rally today at 12:45 to introduce their new coach. (And if you’ve been following the Cats cheerleaders on Cheerleader U, here’s a chance to see them in action.)
Check back later today…I’ll post video of his introduction. We have a new face in KY, and in a week or two, he’ll beat Fletcher and all the other horses for name recognition!
