littlemissknowitalld1.jpgFirst, let me go off topic and discuss a little sports and entertainment.  becks.jpgThe yummiest dish to hit soccer is moving stateside.  What’s that Becks?  Shh shh, dear, just stand there and look pretty.   (Have you ever heard him speak?  Its like mixing Mike Tyson’s voice with a little bit of Dodger from Dickens…)  Little Miss Know it all is suddenly a lot more intersted in the MLS.   I do own this magazine.  I bought it for the articles, I swear.

Alright, settling down…

Back to political news.  Seems that the Washington Post has realized that it needs more readers than just the bunch of old farts who read it now.  They’re making a play for Jon Stewart, no doubt to bring in the younger crowd with lots of disposable income that follow him and his team wherever they say to.  They’re still in talks, but you can see more on the story at The Washingtonian.

C’mon 50 million a year for a 2nd rate player. He won’t even make the A list in Hollywood. I heard the head of the NHL is scared that MLS will take their place as the 17th most popular sport in America.

Hmmm…them are fightin’ words. You just wait until Mr Little Miss Know it All hears that…;)

Wait a minute. Which 2nd rate player? Jon Stewart? Stewart seems to enjoy and even revel in is 2nd rate status, although the truth is that among Jewish comedians who host politically-themed talk shows on Comedy Central, he is definitely number one.
And the NHL has good reason to be scared, but not necessarily of Beckham. With global warming it’s getting harder to find any place to play hockey.

The NHL has nothing to fear, but Baseball has something to fear, but that is another long story. Beckham is not a 2nd rate player. His lack of playing time in the past six months has been due to injury and team politics at Real Madrid (which as a team has been a HUGE mess for the past 5 years). He could still play for any top team in Europe and will prove this in MLS, and his marketing pull will be immense. This is like Michael Jordan at 31 declaring he is going to play in Greece. Becks has talent (although not MJ level talent) but also huge name recognition and uses it better than MJ ever did. Anyone who says is a second rate player are people who think he is a clothes horse, or talk radio guys who know nothing about the world of soccer and are reassuring themselves that this will pass.

Becks was a major influence in the World Cup for England. He is also the type of player that exemplifies competitiveness without sacrificing morals. Although driven on the field, he is a physically clean player that spends time training hard and has time for any fan no matter their age or background. Can we say that about baseball players? He is worth every penny that LA pays him. Because ultimately the MLS is going to benefit with an influx (but controlled number) of quality players, a restructured reserve team policy, better marketing and recognition by the US media.

Jon Stewart is cool. He is definitely what the WP needs. Becks is definitely what MLS needs. Jon is hip, and very smart and not just on his own show. I have seen him on other MSNBC and CNN shows being interviewed and he holds his own very well with other experts.

Becks, is not the Becks of 4 years ago. But he is still fit, smart and still has 2 years left of real competitive, world class football left in him and 4 years of top flight European football in him. He was a player that turned down AC Milan and Arsenal this January, and they are perennial powers. England have apparently dropped him recently more to help move in a different direction tactically. Interestingly they have done poorly since dropping him. But a coup for MLS. Becks is already in with the Oscar/Emmy/MTV/supermodel crowd so him being A-List is not a stretch, especially with friends like Orlando Bloom holding world cup parties and Tom Cruise inviting him to weddings.

Posh is the one that will have to watch herself. Definitely riding hubbies coat tails, how long will she be happy with that?

Not to mention the number of kids playing soccer in leagues now outranks football, basketball and baseball combined. That’s because its constant running (and Mom’s say Hallelujah because that means more quiet at home,) and everyone gets serious playing time. That has been happening for 15 years now, and we are beginning to see the proof of that. The US men’s and women’s team gets shown on ABC, as does MLS…there’s a national cable channel dedicated to just soccer, and ESPN covers it quite a bit. Its not NASCAR, and MLB has a lot more to fear from NASCAR, but soccer is on the rise here. Its a game anyone can play, whether in the alleys or in the fields, everyone can play soccer. Besides, soccer moms love looking at Becks…
